Annapolis Valley Updates, Issue #004 -- February Updates
March 07, 2009
Hi ""

Thanks for subscribing to my Ezine - Annapolis Valley Updates. First let me tell you about some of the interesting things you may expect to see in these articles. I plan to mail one Ezine out every month.

The main reason for the Annapolis Valley updates is to keep you updated on any changes and additions I have done on my web site Annapolis-Valley-Vacation.com. The site is getting so big it is hard to find the new stuff, so I will provide you with links to these changes.

For those already in the Annapolis Valley or planning to visit the area I will also list some of the exciting things going on in the Annapolis Valley for the following month. For more information on these and other events make sure to check out my Annapolis Events Page on my web site.

Sometimes I run across announcements and plans for the changing tourist industry here in the valley and I would like to share them with you also. They will be in the "News From The Valley" section.

If you like this e-zine, please do a friend and me a big favor and "pay it forward", by forwarding this on to them.

If a friend DID forward this to you and if you like what you read, please subscribe by visiting My Annapolis Valley Updates Page.

Introduction

It has been another month already and again it seemed to just whip by. I know March can still be a stormy month, but have you noticed the sun is starting to get a little stronger and the days are getting longer. We will really notice it tonight, we have to turn our clocks ahead one hour at midnight. Don't forget to check your smoke detector batteries at the same time.

Well I was busy all month on my accommodation pages again, almost done now and hopefully will be up by my next Annapolis Valley Updates. Just waiting to hear back from some of the accommodation places now before I can finish them up.

I did get some other work on the web site done this month, I have quite a few new things for you to check out. I tried to get write-ups on some of our many festivals that go on every year, there are so many of them, but I did manage to get some done. See below for links to these new pages.

I put in for a job position with the Department of Tourism, Culture & Heritage for the summer, but as yet I have not heard anything. So it is looking like I will be heading out to Saskatchewan again this summer, but I will have a little better access to the internet this year, I hope, and will be able to keep up with my web site and this eZine.

The site grew so much last year while I was away and it is looking like it is going to be an exciting year this year as my stats are really going up every day. I am ranking in the top ten for most of my pages with the main search engines and my hits per day have been over a hundred every day this year. I am excited; the web site is growing just like Site Build It said it would!

Ok, I will end the blabber and get to the upcoming events and news.

Upcoming Events

  • Although there are many things happening in the valley this month, there is only one I am going to mention on here. It is the annual Maple Syrup Days at Munroe's Mountain Maple on the weekends of March 21-22, 28-29 and April 4-5. I am planning to attend this event this year, it sounds interesting. They offer a tour of the Sugar Shack where the maple syrup is produced, 5 seating’s to a maple-menu meal, (reservation only), taffy on the snow and sleigh rides. Reservations are by email at mountain.maple@ns.sympatico.ca. Munro's Mountain Maple is located at 347 Upper Sulken Lake Road on the South Mountain in back of New Minas.

These are just a small part of what is coming up in the Annapolis Valley. Please check my events page; your local papers or the AVR radio station to find out about other events.

News From The Valley

  • One Third of Digby County up for sale! J.D. Irving is selling their land in Annapolis, Digby and Yarmouth Counties which adds up to 174,000 acres, about twice the size of Kejimkujik National Park. The land boarders on Kejimkujik and encompasses two of Nova Scotia's largest hydroelectric systems, 16 km of frontage on the Tusket River, more than 250 km of lake frontage, 69 undeveloped lakes, a 600 km trail system and a road network of 300 km, and about a third of Digby County. Also located on these lands is the historically important site of New France or Electric City as it is known as. So far the government has indicated that it cannot afford to purchase this land, and this is causing uproar, so to speak, here. J.D. Irving has always permitted this land to be used for trails, hiking, hunting, fishing, kayaking and many other recreational uses, but this could all be lost with new private land owners. For more information on this or to join their petition check out their web site at http://www.buybacknovascotia.ca/Background.html.

  • A major financial boost was given by three levels of government to the project to have Grand Pre National Park designated a UNESCO world heritage site. As we know this is a very important historical site which tells the story of the Acadians of the area and of early farming in the area.

  • There is a new heritage center in the Valley - The Northville Farm Heritage Center located in Northville, Kings County. This site started out as a dream seven years ago to show the old farming methods of Kings Co., and through the work of hundreds of volunteers the dream has come true. At this heritage site you not only can see the old farming tools and implements but you can actually see them being used. I will have more about this on my web site in the near future.

  • Oak Lawn Farm lost one it's prize animal and display last month when the big lion Rutledge passed away from old age. Rutledge would have turned 18 years old in May. The average age for a lion is 14 years. He had been hand raised and spent his whole life at the farm. In 1997 Rutledge made it into the Guinness World Records as the heaviest lion in captivity weighing in at 807 lbs, (365 kilograms). He will be missed and the owners of Oak Lawn Farm have indicated that some type of memorial will be made for him.

That is just a little of what has been happening in the Annapolis Valley this past month. I will keep you updated on these issues.

Updates & Changes to Annapolis-Valley-Vacation.com

Now for my web site changes and additions.

No wonder the month has gone by fast, I actually have been very busy. I really hope these changes have made my site easier to find information you are looking for. There is just so much I want to add to the site and I just never seem to have enough time.

I knew when I started this web site that the Annapolis Valley and Bay shore area had a lot to offer, but even I did not expect to find so much here. How long did you plan on staying here? I live here and cannot find enough time to visit everything, so you may want to either stay longer or come back again and again.

One of the new things I am planning to add very soon is some information about Geocaching in the area. This is becoming very popular fast and, so I am finding out we have some great geocaching set up already in the area. So keep a watch out, I hopefully will have a page up about it soon.

I hope you have found something interesting or informative in this issue of Annapolis Valley Updates. If you have any comments, Ideas, or other feedback I'd love to hear from you. Just reply to this Ezine and tell me what you think!

Until next month, have fun, live good and love hard!
