Annapolis Valley Updates, Issue #005 -- March Updates
April 10, 2009
Hi ""

Thanks for subscribing to my Ezine - Annapolis Valley Updates. First let me tell you about some of the interesting things you may expect to see in these articles. I plan to mail one Ezine out every month.

The main reason for the Annapolis Valley updates is to keep you updated on any changes and additions I have done on my web site Annapolis-Valley-Vacation.com. The site is getting so big it is hard to find the new stuff, so I will provide you with links to these changes.

For those already in the Annapolis Valley or planning to visit the area I will also list some of the exciting things going on in the Annapolis Valley for the following month. For more information on these and other events make sure to check out my Annapolis Events Page on my web site.

Sometimes I run across announcements and plans for the changing tourist industry here in the valley and I would like to share them with you also. They will be in the "News From The Valley" section.

If you like this e-zine, please do a friend and me a big favor and "pay it forward", by forwarding this on to them.

If a friend DID forward this to you and if you like what you read, please subscribe by visiting My Annapolis Valley Updates Page.

Introduction

Spring is here in the Maritimes! Some of the flowers are up like crocuses and daffodils and the grass is getting green. It won't be long and we will be hearing the lawn mowers going. I have been looking for the mayflowers, but it is still a little early for them I guess. I really wish I could find some before I leave for out west. I love the smell of them.

Well I finished up on my accommodation pages, finally. That was a big job. I changed the main page and all the ads on the types of accommodation pages. I had a pretty good response from the places of accommodations for starting out, I was very pleased.

I have also had a chance to meet or at least talk to many of the accommodation owners and I must say every one of them seem to be so friendly. From talking to them I figure I am just going to have to try some of these accommodation facilities myself. They all sound like great places to stay and the owners are so knowledgeable and friendly.

Well I am almost all packed and ready to leave for my summer job in Saskatchewan. I look forward to seeing my bosses and co-workers again and to drop my fishing line into the lake. I do not expect I will ever come close to the great fishing year I had last year.

I am excited to get out there again and see my kids and grandkids, I miss them so much, but I am going to miss everyone here also. It is always an emotional time for me, but I will be back in the fall again.

I did hear from the internet provider and hopefully I will have my internet in my cabin soon. Until then I will be checking my emails and comments pages every chance I get, so keep them coming.

I would like to mention though, that I may be late getting next month's updates out. I will be busy with the move out and starting the job, but I will get to it as soon as I can.

Now for the news from the last month:

Upcoming Events

  • This is Easter Weekend and there are several events planned throughout the valley including Easter Weekend Gardens Style at the Historic Gardens in Annapolis Royal. This event is being held right through the Easter Weekend April 11 - 13. Then next week, from April 13 - 17 it is the annual Gardens Spring Cleanup. This always brings in lots of volunteers to help with getting the gardens ready for the season.

  • On April 26 at the Sport & Fitness Center in Greenwood is the annual Greenwood ZX 10km Road Race & 5km Fun Run.

  • Acadia University in Wolfville is hosting the Eastern Canadian Trampoline & Tumbling Championships on May 2 starting at 7 p.m.

  • The summer festivities kick off with our Annual Apple Blossom Festival from May 27 to June 1 2009. Keep watch for all the great events that will be happening throughout the Annapolis Valley during blossom week. If you have someone you would like to bring home for the festival, AVR radio along with other sponsors in the valley have a great contest going on now to do this.

These are just a small part of what is coming up in the Annapolis Valley. Please check my events page; your local papers or the AVR radio station to find out about other events.

News From The Valley

  • One Third of Digby County up for sale! The only news I have heard on this since last month is that J.D. Irving has extended the date of sale to offer a little more time for government & organizations to decide what they want to do. I know there have been meetings and petitions going on right across the province about this.

  • The Pines Resort has announced that it plans to promote experiential tourism. As I mentioned in earlier issues people in the valley are looking at offering more unique experiences to the visitors to our area. This will include things like adventure walks with a guide who might show you how to pick and dry dulse, or tell you stories of folklore from the area. It could also involve workshops with the many artist and craftspeople where you may try the craft yourself, or a farm where you can try your hand at gardening or shearing a sheep. Maybe you would like to head out for a day of hand-lining on a local fishing boat or help them pull lobster traps. More and more people are banning together here in the valley to tell the visitors what we produce, show them how we do it and offer them a chance to try it themselves. We want to offer adventures that they will remember and talk about for years, and places like the Pines Resort and the Milford House are doing a lot to promote these adventures to their visitors.

  • The Greenwood Military Aviation Museum are planning on holding several events this summer to mark the anniversary of the first flight in Canada. They have already introduced a Centennial of Flight Coin Series. The replica of the first aircraft built by Alexander Graham Bell, the Silver Dart has been shipped to 14 Wing Greenwood and will be on display later in the year. They are also planning on a couple of appearances of the Canadian Snow Birds, once on May 20 and again at the Silver Dart air show being planned for August.

  • Plans are in the works for the Tiverton and Central Grove Heritage Association to take over the Boars Head Light Station. The group has been maintaining the lighthouse since 2005 and has some great plans for it when they take it over.

  • Two former Nova Scotia Premiers and a chief justice were all in Annapolis Royal on Feb. 26 to unveil a plague commemorating the Annapolis Royal Courthouse's statue as Canada's oldest functioning courthouse.

That is just a little of what has been happening in the Annapolis Valley this past month. I will keep you updated on these and other issues.

Updates & Changes to Annapolis-Valley-Vacation.com

Now for my web site changes and additions.

  • I mentioned above that I have finally finished my new accommodation pages and ads. You may have a look at them by going to my Main Accommodations Page and then clicking on all the links. Several of the ads will have links that will take you to a full page ad about that accommodation.

  • I made up a new page for anyone interested in advertising on my website. You can find this new page at my Advertise With Me Page.

  • I also made up a new page on our Nova Scotia climate. I wanted to give our visitors an idea of what our climate is like here. It is kind of interesting, see what you think of my Nova Scotia Weather Conditions Page.

  • Geocaching is fast becoming a very popular outdoor treasure hunting game. Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley are getting in on the action by offering several great geocaches to be found by you and your GPS receiver. Find out about this great new adventure game and where you can look for the geocaches in the area by looking at my new Geocaching Sites in Nova Scotia Page.

  • I finally received most of the new dates and times for our many festivals and events and have updated my events pages for 2009. If there is a festival or event you are interested in you can find the new dates and times at my Spring Events Page, or at my July Events Page and on my August Events Page.

Although I have added some dates and times, I Will update the Fall events page later in the year.

I have had to change or updated a few other pages also. When changing the accommodation pages I decided to change my wheelchair accessible accommodations page to handicap accessible accommodations.

I added another great Whale watching adventure to my list on my Whale Watching Page. I also added a new link to a great website about renting a car called "Best Car Rental Tips" on my Ways To Visit Annapolis Valley Page. I also had to update my site map after all these changes.

Well that is all the new things for this month. It has been another busy month.

Unfortunately next month I will not have a chance to write up many more pages, but hopefully after that I will be back into it again.

Until next time I hope you are able to get outside and enjoy spring after our long winter. Make sure you take the time to smell the flowers, especially if you are lucky enough to find some mayflowers.

I hope you have found something interesting or informative in this issue of Annapolis Valley Updates. If you have any comments, Ideas, or other feedback I'd love to hear from you. Just reply to this Ezine and tell me what you think!

Until next month, have fun, live good and love hard!
