Do you believe in GHOST? Have you ever wondered if they do really exist? You must have some curiosity or you would not have opened up this page on Annapolis Ghost Stories.
Well most people in Nova Scotia have some belief in them. Too many have witnessed strange occurrences that have no other explanations than to have come from the super-natural.
We are the oldest settlements in Canada; it has been over 400 years ago since Champlain decided to settle here and had the Port Royal Habitation built. You know there has to be lots of Annapolis Ghost Stories told over the years!
Yes there have been many ghost stories from our area, hundreds of books wrote about them also. One of the most famous ghost story books written about our area is "Bluenose Ghost" written by proclaimed folklorist Helen Creighton. Millions of copies of this book have been sold since it was first published in 1957 so many it was republished in 2009.
Recently the Nova Scotia Archives have released a video on YouTube that was made years ago showing several of the ghost stories from Helen Creighton's famous book.
It was produced by the Nova Scotia Communications & Information Centre for the Department of Tourism, Province of Nova Scotia. Where it is an old film the quality is not the best but it is still very interesting to watch.
This is just a sample of the many Annapolis Ghost Stories from our historic area. Almost everyone you talk to from the Annapolis Valley have their own stories to tell, or ones they have heard of from friends and families.
I even have a few myself. Yes I have seen ghosts; I have even talked to one, granted I did not know it was a ghost at the time. I have even lived in a haunted house. I never seen the ghost from this house, but I heard him almost on a nightly basis. I have also witnessed several things over the years that have no explanation except to be super-natural.
When I became interested in the history of this area I noticed that Annapolis Ghost Stories seemed to be a big part of our history. I found ones mentioned in several of the research sources I used.
I learned that in the time before TV and radio people would entertain themselves by telling stories. It was a big thing and everyone would take part, even the children. People grew up knowing these stories, it became their history.
Now only the ones that were written down are remembered. It is so sad many of these great stories are lost to us forever.
With Annapolis Ghost Stories I hope to bring back these stories, provide a place for them to be written down. It does not matter if you believe in Ghost Stories or not it is still fun to read them.
I will let you decide if you think they are true or a product of someone's wild imagination. I do not claim that these Annapolis Ghost Stories are all true or false, I am only providing the stories I have heard or read about over the years.
In most cases I have tried not to pinpoint any particular people or homes unless they have agreed to have their names and/or homes mentioned in these stories.
I am providing a reference list for these at the bottom of this page.
When I was collecting together all my many stories from the Annapolis Valley I found I had to separate them into different catogories, I had so many.
Anything that had mention of a ghost or forerunner I added it to this section on Annapolis Valley Ghost Stories.
Some stories had a real mystery or strange happening without any mention of the super-natural and you will find those stories in the section on Annapolis Valley Mysteries.
However some of our biggest mysteries in these parts is all the buried treasure and hidden riches said to be here. There were so many I decided to give these stories their own section called Annapolis Valley Treasure.
The last section in this group is all the stories handed down over the years that are neither ghost stories or mysteries but are a major part of who we are in the Annapolis Valley. These stories are about our people, our culture, our past and will be found in the section Annapolis Valley Folklore.
