Annapolis Royal Walking Tour A Stroll Through the Centuries
The Annapolis Royal Walking Tour will take you back in time to a day when Annapolis Royal was a garrison town, the capital of Acadia, and a very prosperous shipping port. There are 135 Municipal Heritage Properties in and around the town. Several more have been designated as Provincial Heritage Properties and others National Historic Sites. Annapolis Royal was awarded the Prince of Whales Prize for its commitment to preserving heritage by Heritage Canada. Within the town of Annapolis Royal you will see some of the oldest wooden framed buildings in Canada. The oldest wooden house still occupied in Canada, the deGannes / Cosby House is located just past the Historic Gardens on St George Street. The house that stands there now was built in 1708 on the foundation of the previous one that had burnt.
Even though Annapolis Royal offers some great guided walking tours, the town is also set up for The deGannes-Cosby House is the oldest documented wooden structure in Nova Scotia people to enjoy their own interpretive walking tours. There have been several interpretive signs erected throughout the town providing you with lots of interesting information about this historic town. You can also pick up a copy of the "Stroll Through the Centuries" brochure put out by the Historical Association of Annapolis Royal from the tourist Information Centre in the Tidal Power Plant building which will provide you with lots of interesting information along the walk.
