Annapolis Valley Folklore

A Piece of Driftwood by Westport, Digby County, Nova Scotia

Annapolis Valley Folklore is a collection of stories from the Annapolis Valley that has helped build us into the people that we are.

These are stories about people and events that have happened over the years which may not have made it into the history books, but have been a big part of our history none the less.

These stories may be about about our heros, or our villians; or they could be about an event which has added to our heritage. They could also be about a person's dream that came true, or a story that gives insight into how life was back in the past.

Every area has it's share of folklore and legends and here are some our best ones.

With Annapolis Valley Folklore I hope to bring back these stories, provide a place for them to be written down. They are a part of our heritage and should be saved and provided for all to read.

I have tried to provide as accurate an account of these stories as I can. There may be some variances in other people's versions, but the main story is always about the same.

I am providing a reference list for the stories that I used at the bottom of this page.

When I was collecting together all my many stories from the Annapolis Valley I found I had to separate them into different categories, I had so many.

Anything that had mention of a ghost or forerunner I added it to the section on Annapolis Ghost Stories.

Some stories had a real mystery or strange happening without any mention of the super-natural and you will find those stories in the section Annapolis Valley Mysteries.

However some of our biggest mysteries in these parts is all the buried treasure and hidden riches said to be here. There were so many I decided to give these stories their own section called Annapolis Valley Treasure.

The last section in this group is all the stories handed down over the years that are neither ghost stories or mysteries but are a major part of who we are in the Annapolis Valley. These stories are about our people, our culture, our past and will be found in this section on Annapolis Valley Folklore.
