Annapolis Valley Treasure

In this section on Annapolis Valley Treasure I plan to provide you with the many stories about buried treasure and hidden riches in the valley area and along the Bay of Fundy. Even though this area is not well known for it's buried treasure there is supposedly a lot that has been buried here.

The rugged shoreline and little coves provided a great place for pirates to unload some of their loot until they could come back for it at a later date.

Sometimes they did come back for it but perhaps could not remember the exact spot they had hidden it. Other times they were either captured or killed before they could come back to claim their riches. There has been some of it found over the years, however there is a lot that is susposed to be still hidden and not claimed.

Many of these Annapolis Valley Treasure stories tell about the curse or ghost that was left there to protect the treasure deterring many from even going to try to look.

Besides the pirate's treasure other Annapolis Valley treasure is said to be buried in our valley, left behind by the thousands of Acadians at the time of their explusion from their homelands.

Fine riches have also been said to have been left behind from soldiers who were stationed at the many outpost and forts throughout the Annapolis Valley. There are true accounts of people clearing their land and digging up "Pots of Gold" so to speak.

With Annapolis Valley Treasure I hope to bring back these stories, provide a place for them to be written down. They are a part of our heritage and should be saved and provided for all to read.

I will let you decide if you think they are true or a product of someone's wild imagination. I do not claim that these Annapolis Valley Treasure stories are all true or false, I am only providing the stories I have heard or read about over the years.

I am providing a reference list for these stories at the bottom of this page.

When I was collecting together all my many stories from the Annapolis Valley I found I had to separate them into different categories, I had so many.

Anything that had mention of a ghost or forerunner I added it to the section on Annapolis Ghost Stories.

Some stories had a real mystery or strange happening without any mention of the super-natural and you will find those stories in the section Annapolis Valley Mysteries.

However some of our biggest mysteries in these parts is all the buried treasure and hidden riches said to be here. There were so many I decided to give these stories their own section here.

The last section in this group is all the stories handed down over the years that are neither ghost stories or mysteries but are a major part of who we are in the Annapolis Valley. These stories are about our people, our culture, our past and will be found in the section called Annapolis Valley Folklore. Annapolis Valley Folklore.

Rules To Remember When Looking For Treasure

Before I get into the many cases of lost or buried treasure in the Annapolis Valley, first I will tell you some of the suspicions and folklore that usually accompanies these stories. These may or may not apply to all of the buried treasure accounts, you can never know for sure. But do you really want to take that chance?

  • The first one usually applies mostly to a pirates treasure left behind, but has on occasion applied to other accounts of buried treasure as well. Usually when a large amount of treasure is buried the people burying it will leave a sacrifice to protect it. This is usually a human sacrifice killed at the last moment before covering the treasure over. It is believed that the ghost of this sacrifice will protect the treasure from anyone trying to steal it. The spirit will do whatever is necessary to protect the treasure.
  • It is said mainly because of this spirit who protects the treasure, that when uncovering the treasure you must do so in complete silence. If a single word or sigh is uttered then this may wake up the spirit and he/she will be given unnatural powers to stop the treasure robbers.
  • Another version of what will happen if you speak while digging up a treasure is that once a word is spoken the treasure will automatically sink farther down into the ground and will not be available for another seven years.
  • Others believe that if any sound is made while uncovering the treasure then the devil will be brought up with that treasure. This one could be much the same as the first account. I would think that if you awoke a spirit who was given unnatural powers it would certainly seem like the devil.
  • Any digging that has to be done to uncover the treasure has to be done at night. This is said to be done to prevent being heard or discovered while you go about your task.
  • There are some that believe that blood has to be shed when you uncover a treasure. They say that blood was shed when it was buried so to counter act blood must be shed when removing it.
  • Some have reported that the ghost actually begged to have the treasure discovered. It has actually transmitted to someone where a treasure is in a dream or other means. It will give all particulars needed of where and how the treasure was left. However as soon as the site of the treasure is disturbed the spirit will carry out it’s duties to protect the loot. Some believe the spirit does this because they become bored or are just very mischievous.
  • Often times just as you are getting close to the treasure something very startling will happen forcing you to speak or scream. Once the sound is made then you suffer the consequences.
  • Some believe that before you take a treasure chest out of the ground you must either put money in or take money out of it.

This all seems to be too much to chance just to find a treasure no one knows for sure is there. But then there are others that will say if there is a chance of finding great riches then it would be worth while taking the risk.
