Bicycle Annapolis County Week

Bicycle Annapolis County Week

After Several Years of Neglect I Tried Out My Bike,
Yup I Could Still Ride It!

The Bicycle Annapolis County Week is a week in June when it is strongly promoted to get out, dust off and ride your bicycle to school, to work or for the sheer fun of it. It is good exercise and makes for a great leisurely activity. Bicycles are also very environmentally friendly and make a healthy change from driving your vehicle to school or work.

So for one week in early to mid-June the Annapolis County Recreation Services host the Bicycle Annapolis County Week in co-operation with recreation departments, Police Departments, businesses and community groups throughout the Annapolis County. During this week and throughout the whole month of June several activities are planned for you and your bicycle from Bear River to Middleton.

One of the special events going on during this festival include Bike Rodeos held in Annapolis Royal, Bridgetown and Lawrencetown. These rodeos are great for young and beginner cyclist to learn a bit about the safety of cycling and the rules of the road by members of the Annapolis Royal Police Department and the RCMP Community Program Officer. Prizes are also given out during the bike rodeo for various things.

Another event that usually goes on during the week is Bike Repair Workshops where everyone can learn some basic bicycle maintenance and repairs.

Several Share the Road Rides and other special community bike rides are scheduled throughout the county during the whole week. These bike rides are usually over moderate terrain and at a slow pace so people of all ages can enjoy the ride. They usually stop for rest stops if needed or to point out different scenery along the way. It is a great way to tour the County roads, you can see so much more on a bike then speeding by in a car. One of these rides is usually the Annapolis West Senior Games Bike Ride among many others.

During the week there is a special day set aside for "Bicycle to School Day" and a "Bicycle to Work Day". On these two days you are advised to pre-register as there are prizes to be won. These days have been very well attended in the past and growing every year.

Something else they have started during this week is a Bicycle Art Contest where kids are encouraged to draw, color or paint a picture of something to do with their bikes. Several entries are usually sent in for this and it is a challenge for the judges to pick a winner.

They have also held Bicycle Poker Rallies during the week where people ride their mountain bikes over trails through the woods and return back to compare poker hands to see who has the best hand at the end. Several prizes are given out during this event.

Also during the week the Club400 holds their "Bicycle Week Challenge" where you can record the amount of kilometres you put on your bike during the week by taking it to school, work or on those leisurely rides. At the end of the week send in your log book and the winners will receive great prizes.

In the past even Kings Transit has become involved by providing free travel for you and your bike during the whole month of June. Space is limited to two bikes per bus, but what a great way to travel to these special events with your bike. I am not sure this is done every year so you may want to check with Kings Transit to be sure.

So as you can see The Bicycle Annapolis County Week is really a great week long event to take part in. You can help the environment, get some great exercise, see beautiful scenery around our County, maybe learn a little bit and have a great time socializing. Who knows, maybe it will feel so good being back on your bicycle again you will keep it out all summer! After all we do have several great bike routes and paths around.
