Capt Kidd's Treasure

Old Postcard of the Port Wade Weir, Annapolis County, NS

Old Postcard of the Port Wade Weir, Annapolis County, NS

One day a Scotsman came to Port Wade bragging that his father had sailed with Capt Kidd. He had a chart and knew that Capt. Kidd had buried treasure at a place called Hudson’s Point.

He bragged so much that eventually three local men went up to him and said they knew were Hudson’s Point was and they wanted to go with there with him and find the treasure. They only agreed to help him if they shared the treasure evenly between them as they all would be putting their lives on the line because of the guard ghost. He agreed and they set out at 10 o’clock the next night.

The four of them had no problem finding the right spot for the treasure thanks to the chart the Scotsman had. They started digging and had dug down several feet when one of them crawled up to the surface for a break. To his astonishment when he looked back down into the hole he still saw four men down there digging.

He was aware of the legend that you cannot speak while digging for buried treasure so he beckoned the other three up out of the hole and showed them that one stranger was still down there digging. They decided to walk away far enough so they could talk this strange event over.

After talking it over they decided they must have miscounted or was letting their eyes play tricks on them. They headed back to the hole only to find the fifth man still in the hole digging. Even though they did not recognize the stranger he looked very ordinary, he was of medium height and was using a pick and a shovel just as they had been.

Right about then they heard a loud rumble and the ground started to shake. All but one got scared and ran off.

The last man felt the noise had been thunder or maybe a small earthquake. He was determined to get the treasure so started back down the hole, but suddenly he was thrown out.

Even though the place they were digging was over 20 feet from shore and the tide was a hundred feet out he found himself in the water up to his neck. He was not hurt but could not explain how he got there.

This scared him very bad and when he got out of the water he decided to go home and forget about the treasure and Capt Kidd.
