The Digby Admiral Walk - A Scenic Walk in Digby

Digby Scallop Fleet, Digby Nova Scotia The Digby Admiral Walk follows along the waterfront through the historic town of Digby. The best times for the walk is early morning to behold fantastic sunrises or in the evening when the sky is lit up over the gut as the sun sets. But whenever you decide to do the walk you will still have a lot to take in. In 1997 Canadian Living magazine announced that Digby is the most romantic place in Canada, and we tend to agree. Digby was named after Admiral Sir Robert Digby who was the commander of the HMS Atlanta which landed here in 1783 from New York. On the ship were 1500 United Empire Loyalist who came here looking for a new place to settle. The new settlers liked what they saw here and set out to build their new colony. Digby soon grew to be an important fishing and lumber center, later becoming home to the World Famous Digby Scallop Fleet. Today besides the scallop fleet, Digby has also become famous as a great place to visit for a vacation or for the whole summer. There is just something about this quaint little fishing town that is so pleasing that people just want to return year after year. Personally I think it has a bit to do with the mouth watering sea food here.
A great place to start the Digby Admiral Walk is at the Admiral Digby's Well (1780) located on the Admirals’ original property and it now marks the entrance to Fisherman's Wharf.
Scene Along the Digby Admiral Walk From here you can take a stroll out on the Fisherman's Wharf and watch the fishermen working on their boats. Be careful though, these fishermen are busy working at their jobs. After you come back off the wharf take a stroll down Water Street and take in all it has to offer. You will find lots of little shops, restaurants and tourist facilities. Stop and take a look at the Fisherman's Memorial (1867 - 1967) which is dedicated to all the local fishermen who have been lost at sea. Also the Soldier's Cenotaph (1921) is a remembrance to those who died in services to Canada during World War I, World War II and the Korean War. The Memorial Look-off located on Water Street provides you with a great view of the scallop fleet and wharf area along with the Digby Yacht Club. Did you bring your camera? Enjoy the boardwalk along the waterfront for more fantastic views of the scallop fleet, wharf and Annapolis Basin. Take notice of the 1840's cannons, which have been moved here from other areas or from ships. Across the street you will see the Admiral Digby Museum which is housed in a mid 1800's Georgian home. The museum is full of interesting artifacts from Digby's history along with a genealogy department. During the summer the museum also provides a narrated Historic Walking Tour of Digby three evenings a week.
