The Annapolis Royal Doll House

Old Postcard St. George Street, Annapolis Royal, NS

Old Postcard St. George Street, Annapolis Royal, NS

I had never heard about the Annapolis Royal Doll House story before, but I found it mentioned in a couple of different books. It is quite a story, I wonder which house this took place in.

A lady who lived in Annapolis Royal found out she was accepted to travel overseas for a three-year term of work as a missionary. She owned one of the big old houses in town and she had a special doll house located in it.

Not wanting to sell her house she asked around until she found a young lady willing to move into the house and take care of the house, her plants and her cats while she was gone.

On the day she was to leave the young lady showed up for any final instructions before she moved in. Everything seemed to be fine until just before the owner was to leave. Just before going out the door she turned and said “Upstairs on the third floor there is a room that contains a doll house. It is locked and must remain so until my return. Under no circumstances should you or anyone else go up to that room. There is no reason for you to enter this room and I implore you not to go against my wishes.” A little concerned but too late to change her mind the young lady agreed.

It was not long after the young lady moved into the house she realized that things were not right there. She would be awakened during the night by footsteps above her. Then she would hear what sounded like children giggling or laughing. As soon as she got out of bed to go and investigate she would hear the scurrying of feet and then silence. She would check all the rooms on the second floor only to find them all empty.

After several nights of this curiosity got to her and so she went up the stairs to the third floor and down the hall towards the forbidden room. She walked down a narrow staircase and stopped just outside the locked door. She listened hard and was sure she heard whispering coming from the other side of the door. Not able to open the door she finally gave up and went back down to her bed.

Then one day as she was cleaning she accidently flipped open the back cover of the mantel clock and there inside was a piece of bright red ribbon with a key attached. She knew right away it was the key to the mysterious doll house. But remembering her promise returned the key to it’s hiding place and closed the door.

But as the nights went one and she kept hearing the mysterious noises curiosity finally got to her. She went down and grabbed the key and headed up to the third floor and the forbidden room. Once she got to the door she stopped and listened but did not hear a sound. So she unlocked the door and reached in to find a light switch.

What she seen in the room amazed her. Everywhere she looked there were dolls. There were big dolls, small dolls; dolls of every shape on the shelves, the chairs, the window sills and on the bed. There were 125 dolls in all; one was even as big as a 6 year old child. She started to relax and back out of the room when something moved and startled her. She then realized her mistake at opening the door.

The missionary who owned the house soon became concerned when she stopped receiving letters from the young lady. She called the house but never received an answer. Next she notified the local police who went to check it out.

They gained entry to the house only to find it empty on the first two floors. They went up to the third floor and soon found the locked door where they heard whispering behind the door. They picked the lock and opened the door to find the young lady lying dead on the bed surrounded by dolls. The dolls were all on their knees beside her on the bed and on the floor. Lying beside her was one large doll with his arms around her neck.
