The Ghost in the Attic

The story “The Ghost in the Attic” is about a couple of Maritimers who, like so many had moved away to find work. As retirement approached they wanted to move back closer to their childhood homes.

After going house hunting they found a wonderful old house in the Annapolis Valley. The house was over two hundred years old but still in great shape. Unfortunately the owners did not want to sell, but would least it to the couple.

The couple moved in and was just settling into their new house when they started hearing noises and things being moved about coming from the attic. The woman insisted she could hear a child crying at times also. They realized then that they had never thought to check the attic when looking at the house. There may be a ghost in the attic!

So they climbed the stairs leading up and opened the door. When they found a light switch they seen the room was full of boxes, trunks and old furniture. Sitting below the only window in the room there was an old steamer trunk and sitting on top the woman seen a little girl.

The man could not see her but the woman described her as about ten or eleven years old wearing a black dress with a white collar and in bare feet. She had golden hair and green eyes. The woman knew this was a ghost right away because she seemed to fade in and out, but she did not feel afraid of her.

The next day the man had some errands to do so left for the day. The woman still curious about the little girl ghost in the attic decided to go back up to the attic. This time the little girl actually talked to her.

She told her that her name was Cassie and she was from London, England. She had sailed over on the Titanic with her family. Cassie described the ship as being very big and that she remembered playing hide and seek on it with her brother. Her father always told them that if anything should happen they were to stay together until he could come get them.

Then one night Cassie could not sleep so went up on deck and was looking over the rail. She seen lots of ice and then the ship hit one very large piece of ice. The ship started to lean and the little girl fell over board. Cassie said she did not remember anything after that until she woke up in this room. She said it took her a long time to figure out that she was dead and she was worried about the rest of her family.

When the lady asked her how come she did not leave this place, Cassie answered that she could not turn the knob to open the door. "But you are a ghost dear, you can walk through it", the lady told her.

At first Cassie did not believe her until she was talked into trying it. She was so thrilled to think that she was not stuck in this little room any more! But she still did not want to leave the house as she said she had to wait for her father to come for her.

Time went on and the lady and Cassie would visit with each other often during the day and soon Cassie would appear to the man also. Everyone seemed to be getting along good.

But then one day the husband came home and said that people told him that several people had lived in this house and twelve had died here. All had been accidental deaths. Some had chocked on food, some had falls, others had been accidentally poisoned and one just died in his sleep. It must all be a coincidence they agreed, their ghost in the attic would not hurt anyone, she was such a sweet child.

Then one day the husband was going down the basement stairs when he was hit on the head and started falling down the steps. The last thing he remembered before passing out was the feeling of being caught by someone and being placed on the floor very gently.

When he awoke he was lying on the basement floor with Cassie looking over him saying it is alright now, he will not hurt anyone any more.

He asked Cassie to explain and she said that there had been a second ghost in the house, a bad ghost who had been hurting people there. She knew about him but he never came into the attic where she was and she never thought she could get out.

She knew people were dying in the house but she could never do anything about it, but this time she had, he won’t hurt anyone ever again. She never told them how she had got rid of the bad ghost, all the man ever seen was a pile of clothes smoldering beside him when he had come to.

The couple lived in the house sharing it with Cassie for several years after that. But then one day while Cassie was visiting with the woman in the kitchen the back door blew open and in came three ghosts. Cassie immediately ran to the male ghost and fell into his arms.

“Father you came for me!” she said. “Yes child we have come for you. We have come to take you back to England with us.” He then turned to the woman and thanked her for taking such good care of his daughter until he could come for her. Cassie said her goodbyes then walked out with her family and they disappeared into thin air. That was the end of the ghost in the attic!
