The Granville Ferry Horses

Old Postcard Showing Granville Ferry, Nova Scotia

Old Postcard Showing Granville Ferry, Nova Scotia

The ghost story about the Granville Ferry Horses takes place across the river from Annapolis Royal.

Granville Ferry is a quiet little village situated on the banks of the tidal Annapolis River. During it’s heyday many sea captains lived here and it’s shores were lined with slips tied up from many different countries. There were several shipyards also located along the shore where new brigs and schooners were built.

It was back in the time of the tall ships when the story about the Granville Ferry Horses began.

A young girl who lived in Granville Ferry always wanted to drive a double seated wagon with a team of horses. Her parents were nervous of her driving the team as one of the horses was quit spirited. But she assured them she could handle them.

There was a young people’s picnic being held at Victoria Beach she wanted to attend, so she hitched up her wagon and left saying bye to her parents. She attended the picnic and had a fantastic time.

She was still thinking about the good time she had while on her way home when the frisky horse started acting up. Something had startled it and it bolted. She tried in vain to control the horse but she was thrown from the wagon and smashed her head into a tree, killing her.

Ever since then every seven years people have heard horses galloping down the hill, but they have never seen them or any tracks from them. People on the road at this time say that the ground will even shake from the running horses and they have pulled off the road to let them go by, but there is never anything there. Some have even mentioned they can feel the wind as the team gallop by.

Not far away in Thorne’s Cove there was also reports of hearing and seeing a horse and wagon go by. Seems it would start at one of the beaches and go about a mile towards Victoria Beach. Then it would go off the side of the road and disappear. Many different people reported seeing this and one man tried to race it but could not keep up at all. It is not sure if this is the same Granville Ferry horses ghost or not.
