The Kingsport Gala Days
Around the end of June you can take part in the Kingsport Gala Days for a great one-day festival. This little community really knows how to fill a day with all kinds of great events with something for the whole family. And every year it seems new events are being added. You can start the day off by finding great treasures at the Early Morning Household Yards Sales starting at 8 a.m. There are always a wide range of great items being sold at these sales and you can't beat the prices! Then head on over to the Lloyd Centre for some really neat displays and presentations. Some of these may include a historical train display, or a history of Kingsport display or an antique engine display. You are sure to find something set up for your interest there. If you are getting hungry then make sure to stop off at the United Church for some great tasting chowder and strawberry shortcake. If this does not interest you then you can always find good things at the several canteens set up. But don't eat too much; you will need to save room for the mouth-watering Chicken BBQ later! Then it is time to watch the children’s parade followed by children’s games, a Bounce Kingdom, a Kids Art Tent, and bingo games. Don't forget about the Bucket Dump Challenge and the Catapult Target Game or the Gypsy Fortune Telling Wagon.
You may also want to take part in or watch the Kayak and Canoe races which always proves to be a fun time. These races will depend on the tide and can be viewed from the wharf area. Also depending on the outgoing tide is the new event - The Slimy Beach Mud Races! It's time to get down and dirty as teams of two take part in a relay race across the mud flats. There is also an open race for anyone from nine to ninety to take part in. Don't worry after the awards are given out there will be garden hoses set up to wash the mud off you. These races are held on the west side of the beach area. After you fill you stomachs at the chicken BBQ it is time for the Concert on the Wharf. Several local bands are invited to play and show off their talent from a covered stage on the wharf. The music may vary from anything from heavy metal to bluegrass.
