Muriels Doll Museum

Muriels Doll Museum caught my attention one day when Judy & I were out exploring the Annapolis Valley.

Judy was into dolls; she started making cabbage patch dolls years ago which she sold at craft shows and markets.

Then she got into many other types of doll making which has developed into now when she creates the most beautiful and realistic "Re-Born Dolls". She has made this her employment and she sells them all over the world. She is very good at it, she has many repeat buyers who fall in love with her "babies". You may see her work by visiting her website - Baby Kisses Nursery

So when I heard about Muriels Doll Museum I figured this was a good place to take my sister.

I wrote down the directions and we headed off to Berwick to find the museum. We chatted away during the drive and before we knew it we were turning into Berwick. At first I could not find the museum, it turned out to be at the private home of Muriel Corkum in her garage in back of the house.

After deciding this was the place we drove in the driveway but we did not see any sign of life. We actually left and visited the Apple Capital Museum first and then came back.

This time I got out and knocked on the door and Muriel answered. I told her I was looking for Muriels Doll Museum and she informed me I had the right place but she was not really open at the time, they were doing some renovations. I must have had a disappointed look because she quickly said she would let us in to see her collection anyway.

I motioned for Judy to join us and Muriel took us to the garage where she unlocked the door, after warning us it was not the tidiest in there at the moment.

My first impression after walking in was Wow, what a lot of dolls! There was dolls covering the whole two rooms of the museum, every size, shape and age of doll was there. There were several I recognized as being really old dolls right up to very modern dolls.

She had an extensive porcelain doll collection which included Lady Di, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Fergie dressed in their wedding attire. There was also a Charlie McCarthy doll on display.

Muriel told us she loved dolls and started collecting them about twenty years ago. When she opened her museum on August 5, 1992 she had well over 3,500 dolls but that number has grown since then. This was the reason for the renovations, she was running out of room. She had shelves from ceiling to floor all full of dolls. There were dolls in carriages on chairs and others sitting at a table having a tea party.

We chatted with Muriel for quite some time, she is a very nice lady and answered any of our questions. She told us several stories about certain dolls and how she obtained some of them, it was interesting.

So if you have any interest in dolls at all I recommend a visit to Muriels Doll Museum.

It is located at 141 Union Street in Berwick, Nova Scotia.

You may want to phone ahead to make sure Muriel is home as she did not have certain open times posted anywhere I could see. Her phone number is (902) 538 8991.
