Old Winchester Road Trail Nice Views of the Valley
The Old Winchester Road Trail is 5.4 km long and is great for walking, hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing. It is owned by Elizabeth & Art Oakley at the Winchester Farm Cabins and is open all year round. There are two ways you can take this trail depending on if you are looking for an easier loop along flat land or a hike 800 metres up a steep path. The easier path will take you through a variety of vegetation as it travels through a clear-cut area, into softwood forest, along a meadow, by a stream and through a swampy area. Shortly after you cross a clear cut area and head back into the woods you will come to a new road heading straight. You will want to stay on the old road that continues to the left. At another place, just after you come to a deep ditch on the left with a small stream you come across another road going off to the left. You want to stay on the main road. You will start to notice the vegetation start to close in on you and you will come to a swampy part. Here you can choose to turn and head up the mountain or continue on the flat path. From here it will not be long when you will start seeing a nice view of the Annapolis River. When you see the new road again it is a good idea to cut back to it. You also have the opportunity to take a more challenging path up the mountain. This trail is more difficult, especially for mountain bikers, but will provide you with some fantastic views of the valley and Annapolis River. If you take the higher trail be careful of a brook which crosses the trail near the start. It will not be too long before you start seeing some fantastic views of the Annapolis River and valley. You will come to a couple of forks in the road on this trail also, keep to the left. Make sure you bring along your camera, you will see some excellent views.     Directions to Old Winchester Road TrailFrom Annapolis Royal follow highway #1 northeast across the causeway.
