Port Royal Treasure

Old Postcard of the Port Royal Habitation, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia

Old Postcard of the Port Royal Habitation, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia

It was always talked about that there was a Port Royal Treasure buried by the old foundation at Port Royal.

One evening during a full moon a few of the local men were sitting around having a few drinks and the conversation turned to the tale of the treasure. As the drinks were going down the talk got more excited and finally they decided that they were going to go out right then and see if they could find the treasure.

They approached the spot where strange things had been said to be seen and got out their picks and shovels and started digging. They had dug down about 4 – 5 feet when their shovels hit a large flat rock.

Thinking this may be the cover to the treasure they cleared the dirt off of it. The rock proved to be as large as a table top but they were able to upend it and move it out of the way.

Underneath they found old iron crock pots and were just about to look in them when one of the men happened to looked up. He grabbed the others pointing above their heads.

Hanging above their heads was the large flat rock tied up with a rope and a huge man standing beside it with a candle. When the man lit the rope on fire with the candle the men in the hole scrambled out of there as fast as they could and ran without looking back.

For quite awhile they were all too frightened to talk about it. But after a few weeks went by they decided to go back, this time in the daylight to see what was there.

They got to the spot where they had dug the hole but there was no hole. In fact the ground did not show any signs of ever being dug up. It is thought that the Port Royal treasure must still be there.
