Pot Of Coins

Old Postcard of Berwick, Nova Scotia
There have been several Pot of Coins reported being found on the old abandoned Acadians farms throughout the Annapolis Valley. This story takes place in Berwick, Nova Scotia. A family who moved to the Berwick area bought an old Acadian farm. The farm was on good land but was quite grown up after being vacant for several years. They did not have much for farm equipment so they hired a yoke of oxen from a neighbour to plough up the field. The neighbour’s son came along to help the new farmer with the oxen. They were about halfway through the field when the plough caught on something in the ground. The farmer went to take a closer look at what they had hit. The boy asked him what it was and he replied that it was a rock. The boy said that they would have to dig the rock out or it would remain in their way. The farmer, thinking quickly, fell to his knees over the spot and complained about a bad cramp in his side. The boy came closer to assist the farmer, but he insisted that he was all right, it was just a cramp and would pass. He finally talked the boy in to taking the oxen back home and unhooking them. He would come and get him when the cramp had passed and they could resume their work. After the boy left the farmer ran to the barn and grabbed a shovel. He went back to the spot and started digging. He dug a rather big hole and uncovered a large pot of coins. It was not long after this his wife and him sold the farm and bought a fine house in town. They told everyone that they found farming to be too hard for them. Neither one of them was ever known to hold a job after this, but they seemed to live quite well. When they died they left a fair sized fortune. It is said that they always had a large pot on the shelf which they never used and that the pot was kept in the family for generations.
