Acadia University's Prophets Room

Old Postcard of the Acadia Seminary in Wolfville, NS

Old Postcard of the Acadia Seminary in Wolfville, NS

The story about the Prophets Room takes place in one of the oldest and finest universities in Nova Scotia. Acadia University is located in Wolfville and was built in 1838 on the belief that everyone has a right to higher education, regardless of class, belief, gender, or race.

The Acadia Ladies’ Seminary, located at Acadia was originally a finishing school for girls in the Baptist way of life. The Prophets Room is actually a small suit of rooms and was built with the residence in 1879. These are the oldest rooms on the campus. These rooms are mainly used for visiting lecturers needing a place to stay.

One of the many visitors who has stayed here was Alexandre L. Amprimoz who arrived here from Brock University in St. Catherine, ON where he teaches the Romance languages. He came here in September 1984 while doing a lecture tour of the Maritimes and stayed for three nights in the Prophets Room.

On the first night he was there he was suddenly awaken to find the windows open and a light wind blowing on the curtains. When he looked around the room he noticed a young woman with blond hair sitting at the dresser combing her hair. She seemed to him to be semi-transparent and he shut his eyes and hid under the covers. For a bit he heard pacing noises but then everything went quiet and all was gone when he looked out from under the covers.

In the late 1800’s one young girl staying at the seminary found out she was pregnant. As this was socially unaccepted and shame would be brought down on her she decided to take her own life. She hung herself from “The Well” a large opening that connected a banister to the second floor under the sky light.

It is believed that her spirit still haunts the back stairwell where odd sounds and visions have been known to occur. It is also believed that she is the young woman Alexandre L. Amprimoz saw that night in the Prophets room. There are many others who have also reported seeing this young lady combing her hair.
