Rooster Blood

Old Postcard of the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia

Old Postcard of the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia

In the story Rooster Blood it is said one person did out-smart a guardian ghost. This Annapolis Valley treasure story is said to have really happened many years ago in Port Wade, Nova Scotia.

One day a farmer in Port Wade was out working in his field when he noticed movement in the distance. He decided to leave his work and get closer to see what it was. As he drew closer he seen a group of pirates digging a hole and there beside them was a rather large chest. This sparked his curiosity so he sneaked up closer and kept hid while he watched and listened.

After they finished digging the hole they lowered the chest down into it. Then suddenly one of them was stabbed with a sword and thrown into the hole with the treasure. The hole was then covered over and hid as best they could. At this point the Captain threw down his shovel and hoe and spoke “Devil take the keys down with you until such time as a rooster will plough and a hen will harrow. When the rooster blood is spilled then you may pass up the keys once again.”

The farmer stayed hid until the pirates had left then he hurried home, glad that he had not been noticed.

He thought about what he had seen and heard for a few days and then went to his barn where he started gathering tools and scrapes of things together. This farmer was quite talented and artistic. He built a little harrow and plough, each complete with a little harness.

He then went to the hen house and picked out a hen and the rooster and hitched both to the little implements. He then encouraged the two of them to move around the yard dragging the little farm tools behind them.

After waiting for awhile to make sure the poultry had actually moved some earth he grabbed the rooster and headed back to where he had seen the treasure buried. When he cut the head off and the rooster blood dripped in the hole suddenly a shovel and hoe appeared.

It is said that this farmer lived quite well after this.
