The Roxbury Road Trail

Another one of the longer Annapolis County trails is the Roxbury Road Trail at a length of 7 km. This trail is great for walking-hiking and mountain biking

The trail is owned by the Department of Transportation and is open year round.

The old Roxbury Road makes an easy hike or bike trail even though it is not much more than a logging road now.

Back in the 1800's Roxbury was a logging community with a population of between 30 - 50. But the supply of lumber was not the best in this location and after several harsh winters people began to move away.

Today the old ruins of Roxbury can still be seen, and many are marked by signs. It is said that an old hermit lives in the vicinity and has made it his job to mark all the important or interesting sights there.

As you sign the guest book look around and you will see a rock wall, still pretty much in tact. You will also notice a cottage and a shed in the area and be careful of several wells around.

As you hike on you will notice other signs of the life that once went on there. There are houses that once stood proud, now a heap of boards and nails on the ground.

As you go on you will notice a sign marked cemetery. You have to leave the trail to the right a bit, but the old headstones are still visible. Although most have fallen down their inscriptions can still be read on some. They seem to go back to about the 1860's.

The Roxbury Road Trail makes a nice afternoon's hike and a chance to go back in time. It will take you approximately 2 hours each way to complete.

Directions

You will find the Roxbury Road Trail by taking exit 19 off the highway 101 and turn left toward Lawrencetown. (Do not get this Lawrencetown confused with the Lawrencetown in Halifax County.) Take a left at the stop sign and then a right in the village to West Lawrencetown. You will cross over the Annapolis River. Keep going until you come to RT 201 and then turn west towards Paradise. You will find the Roxbury Road between West Lawrencetown and West Paradise. Keep a shape watch for the road sign. The parking lot and trailhead is approximately 1.35 km in from main road.

Have you been on the Roxbury Road Trail and made it back to the old village? Did you get some photos of the signs and ruins?
