"The Thing", Thornes Cove, NS

Thorne's Cove, Area Where The Thing Was Seen The story about The Thing is one I have heard about all my life. No one has ever been able to explain just what it was that night. Some believe it was a forerunner. When you travel down the road from Annapolis Royal to Victoria Beach you will travel through Thorne’s Cove, located a ways below the Port Royal Habitation. Thorne’s Cove is a favorite place for clam digging and at the dip in the road you can often see the people out on the mud flats during low time digging these delicious shell fish. It is here at the dip of the road and across the bridge where the story about The Thing took place. There once stood four houses – the Holme’s, the Cronin’s, the Riordan’s and the Thorne’s homes. Most of these houses are long since gone, but there is the remains of a couple of them still there. Joe Holmes was over to visit his neighbor and friend Mr. Thorne who lived on the other side of Thorne’s Cove. It was around 10 p.m. when he remembered he had a letter to mail. The post office was located in the Riorden’s house located between their two places. They decided to walk there together and visit along the way. They mailed the letter and then sat alongside the road and visited. It was a bright night with a full moon. The Riorden’s grass was quite tall and there was a turnip field in behind. They were chatting away when they heard a noise that sounded like a hoe hitting a rock. They stopped and leaned forward to listen better. That is when they first seen it! This Thing was crawling on it’s hands and feet coming from the southeast corner. When it stood up they thought it looked like a man; but then it went out of sight. Still wondering who or what it was they kept looking to see if it came out again and sure enough it reappeared and came part way across the road before it disappeared again. “Did you see that?” they both asked each other. But before they could answer it reappeared and went under the cherry tree. Behind the two men were quite a few apple trees and they suddenly started to shake and apples began falling to the ground. By this time both the men were so shaken up they decided to get out of there, but where do they go? They both lived in different directions and they did not want to split up! They decided to go to Joe’s and took off on a run. They did not stop until they got to the house. Then they stopped and discussed what they had seen. There did not seem to be an explanation and time had calmed them down so they decided to go back. As they headed back they noticed The Thing coming down the road halfway between the Riorden’s and the Cronin’s to meet them. Joe walked right up to it and looked it in the face. It had on black pants, a white shirt and black braces. It’s head was bare and it was about medium size. The eyes looked like they were sunk in, but were very bright and penetrating and it looked like a skeleton. Once up close Joe screamed and took off running, but The Thing took off after him staying about 20 feet behind him. They jumped the fence at the Home’s place and The Thing cut through the field to cut them off, but they reached the house first. The two men stood in the doorway and watched The Thing for half an hour. It was sitting on a rotten pole by the stone wall just watching them. In the morning they checked out the pole it had been sitting on and found it to be so rotten it probably would not even hold a bird. It just crumbled away at their touch. The men decided not to talk about their experience as they still could not find an explanation for it. A year later Joe, who had been a little feeble from birth, took sick. He died of a tubercular throat and suffered tremendously before he died. But he always had a clear mind right up until the end. A few days before he passed away he told his mother that The Thing had appeared to him and rubbed his throat. Even though he had been in severe pain in his throat before, he did not feel any more pain until he passed away. It was then thought that maybe this “Thing” had been a forerunner.
